For smaller IPS pipe outside ASTM F714's scope, specify the appropriate small-diameter standard, such as ASTM D3035 where applicable.

▎Applications of HDPE Mining Pipe

Mineral Slurry and Tailings Transportation

HDPE slurry pipe carries water-solid mixtures between processing facilities, pumping stations and tailings storage areas. Its abrasion resistance makes it a practical option for suitable mineral slurries.

Pipe selection must account for solids concentration, particle size and shape, slurry density, velocity and operating pressure. Bends, transitions and other areas of disturbed flow deserve particular attention when assessing wear.

Mine Dewatering, Pit Drainage and Depressurisation

HDPE pipe transfers collected water from pits, underground workings and drainage systems to treatment, storage or discharge facilities. Its flexibility can help accommodate uneven routes and limited ground movement within the design allowance.

For deep pits and routes with substantial elevation changes, selection should consider static head, pump shut-off pressure, transient pressure and any vacuum conditions.

Process Water and Dust Suppression

Mine operators use HDPE pipelines to distribute process water, supply dust suppression equipment and transfer recovered water for reuse. Coloured stripes can assist line identification when coordinated with the site's marking scheme.

Heap Leaching, Solution Mining and Leachate Collection

HDPE can be considered for heap-leach distribution, solution mining, leachate collection and treatment networks. Suitability depends on the complete fluid composition, concentration, temperature and operating conditions. Chemical compatibility must be checked for the specific process solution.

Other uses include mineral-processing water treatment and general water transfer around the mine.

▎Advantages of SIFFO HDPE Pipe for Mining

Abrasion Resistance for Suitable Slurry Duties

PE100 pipe offers useful abrasion resistance for many slurry services. However, PE100 is a strength classification, not a guaranteed abrasion-performance rating. Actual wear depends on the compound, slurry characteristics and operating conditions.

For severe abrasive service, discuss slurry testing, wear allowance and inspection requirements before finalising the specification. Pressure capacity must remain adequate as the pipe wall wears.

Corrosion Resistance in Mine Water Environments

HDPE does not rust and can avoid the electrochemical corrosion associated with metal pipelines. This makes it attractive for many mine-water and process-fluid duties. Compatibility still requires confirmation where fluids contain aggressive chemicals, hydrocarbons or mixed contaminants.

Fused Connections for Pipeline Continuity

Properly completed butt-fusion joints connect compatible pipe ends directly without a separate coupling at each joint. Electrofusion fittings and flanged transitions can be used where the layout requires them.

Joint reliability depends on qualified procedures, compatible components, correct equipment and installation control. For abrasive slurry, internal fusion beads and transitions should be reviewed as part of the wear assessment.

Flexibility for Challenging Routes

HDPE's flexibility can simplify routing through uneven terrain and help accommodate limited movement. Mine-site installation design should still address bending limits, supports, anchoring, thermal movement and protection from vehicles and falling rock.

Options for Outdoor Exposure

Black pipe uses a suitable UV-stabilised compound for outdoor service. SIFFO also offers an optional UV-stabilised white co-extruded outer layer to help reduce solar heat absorption compared with a black surface.

The actual thermal benefit depends on sunlight, wind, location and operating conditions. A white outer layer does not remove the need to assess pipe-wall temperature and pressure derating, and it does not increase internal abrasion resistance.

▎Selecting SDR for a Mining Pipeline

SDR is the ratio of pipe outside diameter to minimum wall thickness. At the same outside diameter, a lower SDR means a thicker wall. For the same material, temperature and design basis, it generally provides a higher pressure rating.

SDRRelative wall thicknessPotential mining duty, subject to design

7.4

Thickest among these options

Higher-pressure pumping and demanding elevation profiles

9

Very thick

Higher-pressure slurry or mine-water transfer

11

Thick

Pressure slurry, tailings and dewatering systems

13.6

Intermediate

Process-water or slurry systems where the calculated duty permits

17

Thinner

Moderate-pressure slurry or water transfer where verified

21

Thinnest among these options

Lower-pressure water transfer or other approved duties

These are application examples, not pressure classifications. Final selection depends on the governing standard, material designation, temperature, design factor, surge, vacuum and wear allowance.

For a fixed outside diameter, increasing wall thickness reduces the internal diameter. Hydraulic calculations should therefore use the actual bore and slurry properties.

▎Standards and Project Documentation

Specify the governing standard at the enquiry stage:

  • ISO 4427: PE piping systems for water supply and pressure drainage/sewerage.

  • EN 12201: PE piping systems for water supply and pressure drainage/sewerage.

  • ASTM F714: Outside-diameter-based PE pipe, including pipe intended for industrial liquids and slurries.

  • AS/NZS 4130: PE pipes for pressure applications.

▎FAQ About HDPE Pipe For Mining

Is PE100 suitable for abrasive mining slurry?

PE100 HDPE pipe can be suitable for many slurry duties. Selection requires assessment of the actual slurry, wear conditions, pressure and temperature. Highly abrasive applications may require testing and a defined wear-management plan.

Which SDR should I choose for a tailings pipeline?

There is no single SDR suitable for all tailings systems. Provide the slurry properties, flow rate, route elevations, operating pressure and transient conditions so the required wall thickness can be assessed.

Can I order a white outer layer?

Yes. SIFFO offers a white co-extruded outer-layer option, subject to the required size and specification. It is intended to help reduce solar heat absorption; the pressure design must still account for service temperature.

Are metric and IPS pipes interchangeable?

No. Nominal labels can represent different actual outside diameters. Confirm the dimensional system and use compatible fittings or designed transitions.

Can SIFFO supply fittings with the pipe?

Pipe and matching connection requirements can be quoted together. Specify bends, tees, reducers, electrofusion fittings and flanged interfaces, including their required pressure ratings.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the application, conveyed fluid or slurry, diameter system, size, SDR or required pressure, operating temperature, quantity, standard, connection requirements and delivery destination. Include particle size and solids concentration for slurry service.
